I've started playing The Longest Journey, an old point-and-click adventure game that could use a healthy dose of anti-aliasing. A little on the obscure side, but nonetheless entertaining if you enjoy this sort of thing. Later, I'll probably play Beyond Good & Evil, Grim Fandango, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Who knows? I might just start playing Silent Hill 2.

So, apparently, when The Pirate Bay went down on April 26th, they weren't hacked, taken down, or anything else. According to this entry on The Pirate Bay's blog, the reason it went down was "due to a broken fiber connection."

No worries then. No MPAA or IFPI intervention. All is good on the pirate front.

Fan Fiction

Oh god. I did it again.

I need to rant to make up for lost posts.

Since I am lazy, this post shall be updated intermittently.

Fanfiction. The final stage of fandom immersion (next to cosplay). Most of the world shuns these creations, others, like myself, find them entertaining. Many live with reading or writing fanfiction as a dirty secret.

Unfortunately, a good 90-95% of fanfiction is utter crap. I read for the 5-10%. The causes for the poor quality are endless.

In this blog post I will attempt to address the more prominent flaws of fanfiction in a futile attempt to raise the standards of the literary fandom community.

How To Write Good Fan Fiction

1. Grammar

This happens to be my biggest pet peeve. Awful grammar. Poor grammar (and spelling for that matter), distracts the reader from the plot of the fic.

There/Their/They're - There is a place. Their is a possessive plural. They're is a contraction of "they are".
Affect/Effect - This is most likely the most difficult to differentiate (even I get it wrong), but also the easiest to remember. Affect is a verb. Effect is a noun. Ex. The nail affected the wood. The nail had an effect on the wood.
Your/You're - Your is a possessive. You're is a contraction of "you are".

2. Spelling

SpellCheck, however useful and expedient, is prone to miss words that were used improperly.

Hot is spelled with one "t". If you spell it as "hott", you will sound like an immature, squeeing fangirl.
"Ok" and "O.K."should be spelled as "Okay"

Sort of grouped into this category is word variation. Using "hot" all the time is a good way to bore readers and undermine interest. Instead, use different words such as "attractive" or "good looking". If you're using MS Word, right click on the word and go to synonyms. There should be a short list of good alternatives for that word. If you don't have MS Word, use Google. If you don't have Google (for whatever reason), get a thesaurus.

3. Punctuation

Never, ever, end a sentence with more than one punctuation mark. Except for ellipses (these three dots ...)
Don't forget to add commas to break up thoughts in a sentance.

4. Author's Notes

Now, there's nothing wrong with Author's Notes (A/N for short). But adding them within the fic breaks continuity and generally irritates the reader. If you absolutely must clarify something (ie. translations), add an asterisk to the word/sentence and then add the clarification at the end.

Also, don't forget to add a disclaimer at the beginning of the fic. For multi-chapter fics, you don't need one for each chapter, but you can if you want.

5. Formatting

Traditionally, a character's thoughts are italicized and not placed in quotes.
When possible, avoid USING ALL CAPS FOR SHOUTING. If you feel you must use ALL CAPS, it has a use for metallic, robotic voices. Again, use only one exclamation mark.

6. Plot

For fuck's sake, don't create a Mary Sue. (A perfect character.)

In my opinion, the best fanfics are the ones that stay canon and keep the characters in character. (Unless you're writing a crackfic.)

An Inexcusable Outrage

Holy crap. Two months without an update. I have no excuse. I was lazy. Apologies to the three-or-so people who may or may not read this.

The Bad News: So, while attempting to create a Linux Ubuntu USB startup drive, I managed to wipe half of my external hard drive. 75 gigs of games, torrents, music, and photos all down the drain. Now Windows XP decides it wants to throw the Blue Screen of Death at me every ten minutes or so. Fuck.

The Good News: I did eventually make a startup drive. I've been using it ever since. I'm too afraid of the BSoD right now. Also, I managed to reclaim some of my deleted games which were backed up on my uncle's compy (BioShock, HL2, HL2:Ep1, HL2:Ep2, Portal, STALKER, Oblivion, and Halo if anyone cares). Some of my music is safely stored on the computer of a friend in Michigan (way to go Andrew!) so some of what I have lost can be reclaimed.

Hopefully, I'll be able to recuperate from this fail on my part. :P Look! A retarded emoticon!

Dead Blog is Not Dead

Long time no update. So, I have several things to get off my virtual chest.
1. Google Chrome.
Everywhere across the blogosphere (almost) has had praise for Google's beta browser, Chrome. I, honestly, did not care for it. Yes, it was fast, it was stable for a beta, and the interface was nice, but I think I'll stick with Firefox 3. No Adblock abilities? Then it's not for me.

2. The Large Hadron Collider
Why does everyone think we are going to die in a glorious black hole? The chances of that are approximately .000000000000000001% or less. And if, however unlikely it may be, there is a black hole created it will be so tiny that it will disappear in less than a nanosecond. CALM THE FUCK DOWN PEOPLE.

3. Spore
The shitstorm about the DRM issue was quite big. Also ironic. As you may know, Spore came with an autoinstalling spybot that monitored you in case you tried to pirate Spore, even after you stopped playing the game and uninstalled Spore. Also, there was a 3 install limit for the game (now 5 installs) and after you used up those installs, you had to call up EA and beg them to let you install Spore again even though they are not obligated to fufill your request. Those who pirated Spore did not have any autoinstalling spyware and unlimited installs. You can see the incentives to pirating Spore.

Well, a long time ago I went to a place called The French Quarter Cafe. Truthfully, it's less of a cafe and more of a bar. I went with my mother, father, younger brother, uncle, and a friend of the family called Johnathan. The "cafe" offered alligator as a entree which, contrary to popular belief, does not taste like chicken.

We were there as friends of the first band, called Xilehom (pronounced "zile-om"). This was their second gig as a band. They played for about two hours until the next band arrived. Their best song probably "Butterfly", written by the lead singer, Wendy.

ROAAAAAR, here it goes. Y'know, "Thank You" cards are useless. Wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper to just email them and say "I GOT UR CARD. KTHXBAI." I swear to God, they have very little purpose. Next thing you'll see are "You're Welcome" cards. Just another way to swindle us out of a few bucks.

All right, I finally talked myself into making a blog and here it is. First, I'm sure you want to get to know me right? No? Well, you're going to whether you like it or not.
Obviously my name is Andrew. I'm 16 (at the time of this post) and this blog was created so I could let out my feelings. Did you fall for that last one? Sappy chumps. I live in Tennessee (no, I won't tell you where; damn pedos...) in hopes that I will eventually sort out my life enough to do something useful. Perhaps I may be in Graphic Design or be a programmer; either way, I have no idea.
So, periodically, I'll add a post describing my day, asking for opinions, voicing my opinions, or something of the like.
